Upgrading of 505 Shelters in Domiz 1 Refugee Camp in Duhok, Iraq
Domiz camp was established and host Syrian refugees since inception in April 2012. The camp has expanded and to date, there are 44,811 refugees residing in the camps (Domiz 1 and Domiz 2).
UNHCR objective is to ensure dignity of the refugees through shelter solutions that provide privacy, protection from elements, space to live and store belongings, facilitate access to utilize essential household services/ infrastructures, minimize the risk of eviction and reduce the competition among refugees thus benefiting from peaceful coexistence with host communities. Since 2014 UNHCR has improved shelters for refugees living in camp with the goal of being “tent-free” with sustainable solutions.
UNHCR is looking to upgrade 505 shelters in Domiz 1 camp. Work to be done include construction of two rooms for 52 targeted families and one room dwelling for 453 families. The project components consist of consist of
- Provision and distribution of materials, such as cement, sand, gravel, sandwich panel, electrical work, doors, and windows based on the detailed Bill of Quantity and technical drawings and.
- Provision of cash for labor to beneficiary families in order to encourage economic opportunities for refugees through a cash for work modality based on progress of construction and instruction from supervising engineer. The beneficiary lists will be provided by the UNHCR team and follow up and mobilization over the work will be done by the UNHCR Team in coordination with the Camp Management (BRHA).
