• UN Procurement Statistics - from the Annual Statistical Report on United Nations Procurement (ASR)

    The United Nations procures goods and services from suppliers all over the world to support its activities and operations. Procurement statistics have been collected from organizations in the United Nations system and reported together since 1984, through the Annual Statistical Report on United Nations Procurement (ASR). This UN Procurement Data portal provides access to the latest procurement statistics through interactive data dashboards as well as the report itself.

    In addition to providing data on procurement spend, this portal provides information on United Nations organizations' efforts to integrate sustainability considerations into their procurement processes, in the context of the United Nations' continued focus on sustainable development.

  • $29.6 billion procured in 2022

    The most recent data available is for the calendar year 2022, when total UN procurement reached $29.6 billion - $7.8 million or 0.03 per cent less than the previous year. The same 31 UN organizations reported in 2022 as in 2021.

  • In 2022, the UN sourced goods and services from from suppliers in 222 different countries and territories. Procurement increased from suppliers in all regions except for Latin America and the Caribbean. Europe was the largest region for UN procurement, while Oceania remained the smallest region by procurement volume. 

    Procurement from least developed countries (LDCs) continued to rise and reached $5.4 billion in 2022 - an increase of 19.0 per cent, or $857 million, compared to 2021. Procurement from landlocked least developed countries (LLDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS)  highlighted in the ASR for the first time in 2022, totalled $5.2 billion and accounted for 17.5 per cent of UN procurement in 2022.

  • Health remained the the largest procurement sector of the UN system. After a record high increase in 2021 due to the procurement related to COVID-19 response, procurement in the sector in 2022 totalled $7.6 billion and exceeded the levels recorded before 2021. 

    Food and Farming was the second-largest sector, moving up from third place for the first time since 2014. Procurement in the sector reached $4.2 billion - an increase of $1.3 billion from 2021. 

    Procurement within the third-largest sector, Construction, engineering and science, totalled $3.5 billion, the same level as in 2021.  

    The top categories remained largely unchanged compared to 2021, with Pharmaceuticals, contraceptives and vaccines being the largest category, followed by Food and beverage products and Transportation, storage and mail services.

    In 2022, more UN organizations reported on collaborative procurement, leading to a record-high total collaborative procurement volume of $1.5 billion - an increase of $394 million from 2021. This emphasizes the power of working together to optimize efficiency and achieve greater impact.

    For the first time in 2022, the ASR includes information about the actions of individual UN organizations in regards to the integration of sustainability considerations into procurement processes.

    For the 2022 report, 29 organizations provided information on sustainable procurement. Among the highlights reported by the participating UN organizations were the progress achieved in the implementation of formal sustainable procurement policies in the procurement processes and in the integration of sustainability criteria into the requirements definitions, as well as focus on additional investments in enhancing the internal capacity for sustainable procurement.
