Description

Background:

One of key strategic priority of the Guadalcanal Province, Ministry of Health and Medical Service (MHMS) as well as the Role Delineation Policy (RDP) is to provide quality health services for pregnant women, specifically for the reduction in maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.

As part of the new WHO guideline on Antenatal Care (ANC) Package, ultra-sound scanning is recommended for all pregnant women in their first trimester attending the health facilities, as well as for high risk pregnant mothers in following trimesters. The MHMS is in the process of updating the ANC to comply with the new WHO standards which includes the training of health workers on the use of ultrasound to scan pregnant mothers attending health facilities, to confirm pregnancy, fatal age, identify problems and needs to follow up ultrasound scanning during the rest of the trimesters.

It has been identified that there is a gap in skills and experience in performing first, second and third trimester obstetric ultrasounds in Solomon Islands. Improvement of the ultrasound skills will improve dating, detection of fetal abnormalities and detection of fatal growth abnormalities which will lead to improved antenatal care. Thorough implementing the new ANC package, the MHMS will be able to strengthening antenatal care throughout the country, improve maternal and fatal outcome and reduce maternal and fatal mortality and morbidity. The MHMS/GP has recently obtained a high quality, portable ultrasounds which will be used in health facilities to scan pregnant women attending ANC.
