Call for Expression of Interest (EOI) from CBOs, CSOs, and NGOs

Sustainable Waste Management, Circular Economy and Recycling Solutions in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone faces growing challenges related to solid waste management, plastic pollution, environmental degradation, marine litter, drainage blockage, flooding and public health risks. Plastic waste is increasingly visible in communities, beaches, waterways, markets, and public spaces, particularly in rapidly urbanizing and coastal communities. This EOI seeks practical, scalable, and financially sustainable solutions that strengthen waste recovery, recycling, and circular economy approaches in the target locations.

Through funding from the Government of Iceland, UNICEF and partners established recycling facilities in Konacreydee and Tombo to promote community-based waste recovery, recycling, livelihoods and environmental improvement. While the facilities have valuable infrastructure and equipment, they are currently underutilized and require sustainable operational models. At the same time, there remains substantial untapped potential to transform plastic waste from an environmental challenge into an economic and social opportunity by supporting innovative recycling, reuse and circular economy solutions.

UNICEF Sierra Leone is seeking qualified CSOs, NGOs, CBOs and non-profit consortia to support sustainable waste management, recycling, environmental sanitation and circular economy solutions in Sierra Leone. Private-sector companies, commercial operators, and for-profit social enterprises are not eligible to apply. The EOI is organized into two Lots, and applicants may apply for one or both Lots depending on their technical expertise and operational capacity.
