Description

UNFPA in South Sudan

In the Republic of South Sudan, UNFPA operates across humanitarian and development settings to deliver emergency reproductive health kits, train and deploy qualified healthcare workers, expand maternal healthcare infrastructure, and coordinate cross-sector responses to gender-based violence. The Country Office partners directly with national line ministries, local non-governmental organizations, and UN sister agencies across all ten states and administrative areas.

Context of this Procurement: Obstetric Fistula & Livelihood Reintegration

Obstetric fistula is a severe childbirth injury caused by prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical intervention. Beyond the acute physical consequences, survivors regularly face severe stigma, abandonment, and socioeconomic marginalization.

UNFPA leads the global Campaign to End Fistula through prevention, surgical repair, and social reintegration:

  • Holistic Recovery: Treatment extends beyond clinical repair to ensure survivors regain personal dignity, psychosocial wellbeing, and economic self-reliance.

  • Socioeconomic Empowerment: Equipping survivors with tailoring machinery, haberdashery, salon packages, and agricultural inputs provides sustainable income-generating opportunities, enabling them to rebuild their livelihoods and successfully reintegrate into their host communities.
