Description
Iran is experiencing increasing water scarcity and climate variability, placing significant pressure on agricultural production. The Urmia Lake Basin (ULB) is particularly affected by drought, increasing temperatures, changing precipitation patterns and declining water availability. The project therefore promotes water-smart precision agriculture to improve agricultural water-use efficiency, productivity and resilience. In this regard, FAO intends to introduce practical digital and precision-agriculture services that translate weather, climate and agricultural information into actionable recommendations for farmers. Several commercial service providers/contractors have already developed operational precision-agriculture platforms incorporating agrometeorological information, satellite monitoring, irrigation advisory and digital farmer services. The Project does not intend to develop a new software platform from scratch. Instead, FAO intends to procure an existing operational service that can be configured and adapted to the local conditions and requirements of the project pilot areas.
