Description

Gender inequality, harmful social norms, and pervasive gender-based violence (GBV), most especially intimate partner violence (IPV), continue to undermine health, human rights, protection, and development outcomes in Nigeria. Women and girls, particularly adolescent girls and young women, key populations, persons with disabilities, displaced populations, and other vulnerable groups continue to experience disproportionate levels of violence and barriers to accessing comprehensive health, psychosocial, legal, and protection services.

GBV , especially IPV remain significant structural barriers affecting the effectiveness of HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), Malaria, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), and broader health systems strengthening interventions. Survivors frequently encounter stigma, discrimination, weak referral pathways, inadequate survivor-centred services, limited legal and justice responses, poor coordination among actors, and insufficient financing for prevention and response programming.

As Nigeria prepares for the Global Fund Grant Cycle 8 (GC8), there is a critical opportunity to strengthen the integration of gender equality, human rights, and GBV/IPV interventions within the national funding request and implementation framework. This includes ensuring that coordinated, multisectoral, survivor-centred, and adequately funded interventions are embedded across disease components and Resilient and Sustainable Systems for Health (RSSH) investments.

Following consultations between the Global Fund Country Team, The National GBV TWG, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), UNDP and UNJT , a one-day national consultative workshop is being convened in Abuja. The session brings together key stakeholders working on GBV/IPV prevention and response to map actors, identify bottlenecks, examine financing gaps, and generate strategic programming recommendations for the GC8 framework.
