ITU staff needs to have access to corporate data while they are on missions, working from home and at Remote Conference sites. At the same time the Union has to provide delegates worldwide with access to ITU data. When conferences are held outside Geneva, up to 2000 participants may require simultaneous access to information on the ITU website from the conference venue.
Due to network delays, the access from remote sites to resources located at ITU Geneva could be very slow, which severely affects the work of the remote users. To ameliorate the situation for ITU staff working at Remote Conferences, the IS Department has implemented the Wide Area File Service product from TACIT Networks (later bought by Packeteer, then by Blue Coat Systems). Blue Coat recently decided to terminate the support of this product by July 2011 and therefore it has become imperative for ITU to find a replacement solution as soon as possible.
It has been decided that the replacement product should not only address the response time issue for ITU staff at remote conferences, it should also provide better response time for staff working from home, located at ITU Field Offices, on mission; and for participants attending ITU conferences located outside Geneva.
