Construction of a marine multi-species hatchery in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
- GENERAL INFORMATION
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Tanzania (Zanzibar Sub-office), intends to pre-qualify a group of firms in a timely manner, and solicit offers from them shortly thereafter for the construction of a marine multi-species hatchery in Zanzibar.
The marine hatchery will cost-effectively provide milkfish, crab and sea cucumber seed for outgrow farmers and other profitable aqua-farmers, supporting ecologically sustainable development of aquaculture and boosting the economic growth and food security of Zanzibar.
- DESCRIPTION OF WORKS
The facility will be located in the north area of the University Campus of Beit Al Rass, few kilometers north of Stone Town (Unguja Island), Zanzibar. The area is fenced and some buildings are available to accommodate logistical support to the contractor.
FAO will tender the execution of the civil works to build a one store production building (concrete slab, concrete columns and beams, roofing with insulated sandwich panels, footprint of about 1.600 sqm), the drainage system to collect the used seawater, 3 small decantation ponds as precautionary water treatment before the release of the seawater on the shore and the discharging pipe at sea (16”). In the production building several fiberglass tanks (not in tender) will be accommodated on top of the slab to support the fish production. The area is already serviced by a 200 KW transformer and the necessary reticulation and electric system will need to be put in place across the production area. A 150 KW backup generator will be installed. According to the consultants, the full construction is expected to need 2 to 3 months for completion after the start of the works.
