Description
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) provides assistance and protection to Palestine refugees in five Fields of operation namely Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank. It does so by offering to a population of some 5.7 million registered refugees a range of human development and humanitarian services in primary and vocational education, primary health care, social safety net, community support, camp improvement, and microfinance. UNRWA provides free basic education to approximately 540,000 Palestine refugee children, through its 710 schools distributed across the Agency’s five Fields of operation. In addition, technical vocational training and higher education is provided at eight Vocational Training Centres for approximately 8,000 Palestine refugees in all Fields and for about 2,000 students in 2 Educational Science Faculties (teacher training institutes, one in the West Bank and one in Jordan). The principal organ of UNRWA is the Advisory Commission (AdCom) which was created by UN Resolution 302 (IV) on 8 December 1949. It is tasked with advising and assisting the Commissioner-General of UNRWA in carrying out the Agency’s mandate. The AdCom meets twice a year, usually in June and November, to discuss issues of importance to UNRWA, striving to reach consensus and provide advice and assistance to the Commissioner-General of the Agency. The sessions of the AdCom are attended by approximately 120 to 140 representatives of governments, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, and UNRWA Executives and Staff Members. The representatives of the AdCom and its subcommittee come from diverse background and during such meetings, there is need for simultaneous interpretation as well as document interpretation services. The SubCom Meetings are attended by approximately 60 participants. Such interpretation services are required during the June and November meetings. Additional interpretation can also be required at side events prior to, or at parallel meetings during the AdCom meetings or during the sessions of the sub-committees of AdCom. To fulfil its mandate, UNRWA seeks to establish a long-term arrangement to henceforth provide simultaneous interpretation as well as document interpretation services during its various meetings, conferences, workshops, roundtables and other activities on needs basis as described above.
