The Key Populations and Innovative Prevention (KPP) Team works on a range of innovative prevention topics including biomedical prevention such as HIV testing services, voluntary medical male circumcision, pre exposure prophylaxis, as well as all relevant prevention and treatment for key populations. WHO defines key populations in the context of HIV and viral hepatitis as people who inject drugs, people in prisons and other closed settings, men who have sex with men, sex workers and transgender people.

WHO prepares an annual landscape on HIV self-testing, which is now broadening into other self-tests for hepatitis and STI self-sampling and multiplex self-tests as part of the Unitaid-WHO enabler. As part of this work WHO developed the first forecast on HIV self-testing in quarter 2 & 3 of 2018. This forecasting work  which will be updated and expanded to support further work in this innovative area to deliver on the UNITAID enabler grant.

In addition, providing strategic country support on HIV testing services requires in-depth data collection and analysis, particularly in low- and middle-income countries in which WHO is engaged on HIV testing activities. The WHO HIV department has a country intelligence system managed by the Strategic Information and Planning (SIP) unit and the HTS data and the generated live scorecard dashboards  on HIV testing are an integral part of this system
