Description

Background

Approximately every two minutes, a baby dies in the WHO Western Pacific Region.  The majority of newborn deaths occur within the first few days, mostly from preventable causes.  The high mortality and morbidity rates among newborns are related to inappropriate hospital and community practices that currently occur throughout the Region.  In 2014, the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific published the Early Essential Newborn Care Clinical Practice Pocket Guide.  The guide aims to provide health professionals with a user-friendly, evidence-based protocol to essential newborn care – focusing on the first hours and days of life.  The target users are skilled birth attendants including midwives, nurses and doctors, as well as others involved in caring for newborns.  It provides a step-by-step guide to a core package of essential newborn care interventions that can be administered in all health-care settings.  It also includes stabilization and referral of sick and preterm newborn infants.

By getting the services of a creative agency (contractual partner), a Mobile Phone Application (App) will be developed by the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Unit of the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO/MCA) for both iOS and Android devices to convert the existing Early Essential Newborn Care Clinical Practice Pocket Guide into an interactive Application.  All written and visual content included in the already published work should be included in the Application.  The Application should also feature an easy-to-use search function to help users easily navigate the contents of the pocket guide.

Purpose/Specific Objective of the Activity

Under the guidance of WPRO/MCA, a Mobile Phone Application (App) will be developed by a contractual partner to create a more useful and accessible version of the Essential Newborn Care Clinical Practice Pocket Guide.  When installed on iOS and Android devices, the App should be able to allow offline usage in remote areas where there is poor internet connectivity.  The App should be highly useful, easy to navigate and should feature a strong search function for optimal user experience.

The resulting work is to be a completed iPhone and Android app available for download in both the Apple App Store and Google Play store.
