Description
Since 2012, WFP’s food security analysis service has used mobile to collect data remotely from communities worldwide, using text messages, interactive voice response, and web surveys. The purpose of the mobile surveys is to track food security through time and to provide early warning of developing food security situations in a way that is quick, affordable and reliable. Details about WFP’s approach to remote monitoring using mobile is available at http://vam.wfp.org/sites/mvam_monitoring/index.html.
These surveys target the general population, beneficiaries of food assistance, and pre-screened key informants. Household surveys commonly involve profiling questions, food consumption, coping strategies. Key informant surveys include questions on food prices, food supply and other community issues.
The activity, which has been ongoing since 2013, is now being scaled globally in Latin America, West Africa, East Africa, Asia and the
Pacific. WFP’s survey volume stood at over 100,000 mobile surveys a year in 2015, a seven fold increase from the previous year. The activity is expected to continue growing; WFP is therefore issuing an RFI to identify prospective providers for SMS, IVR and web-based surveys.
