Description
The United Nations Procurement Division (UNPD), on behalf of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), is currently seeking information from manufacturers of bespoke solutions for the destruction of small arms ammunition, of all types and calibres up to a maximum 12.7mm (including shotgun ammunition), and pyrotechnics.
The International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG) 10.10 considers ammunition demilitarization and destruction as one of the generic areas of conventional ammunition stockpile management and classifies destruction/demilitarization as "the physical destruction of ammunition, or the use of industrial processes to demilitarize ammunition and recover raw materials for reuse and recycling."
Currently, the United Nations relies on Level 1 destruction methods, such as open burning (OB) and open detonation (OD), for dealing with expired or unserviceable ammunition across its missions. However, in pursuit of greater environmental sustainability, the United Nations, through UNMAS, is now seeking a bespoke Level 2 solution capable of destroying small arms ammunition (up to and including 12.7mm), shotgun ammunition, and pyrotechnics. This system should achieve destruction through mechanical breakdown, incineration in environmentally controlled systems, or any other purpose-built, environmentally friendly method.
This initiative seeks to identify potential vendors and available or prospective solutions that address the needs outlined above and detailed further in the section below. Additionally and without commitment, it serves to inform interested parties about the forthcoming formal procurement process, the Invitation to Bid (ITB), for the procurement of a single unit of such a system.
