Regional study of Wage Protection Systems in the Gulf Council Cooperation (GCC) countries
The Wage Protection System (WPS) is described as an electronic salary transfer system designed to pay wages directly into the personal bank accounts of workers. An innovation developed in the GCC following the widespread practice of withholding wages - mainly of migrant workers – the development of WPS was an important step forward for ensuring timely and correct payment of wages. Despite more than a decade of implementation of WPS in some countries, relatively little information is available about the institutional frameworks and internal mechanisms for how each WPS is designed and operates. The ILO is therefore seeking a qualified service provider to develop a regional comparative study of the WPS in the six GCC countries.
