Title of the assignment

Efficiency of Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) Technologies in Rohingya Refugee Camps

Purpose

To monitor the efficiency of Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) technologies being used in the Rohingya Refugee and establish wastewater monitoring guidelines.

Location

Rohingya Refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Estimated Duration

Duration of contract 12 months

Expected Start Date – 1st September 2019

Objectives, Purpose and Expected Results

The objectives of the assignment are:

  1. Recommend appropriate wastewater biological and chemical parameters to be monitored to ensure compliance with national/international standards. 
  2. Measure quality parameters of raw sewage in and treated effluent outflow of at least one example of each sewage treatment technology currently being used in the Rohingya camps.
  3. Compare quality data collected from camp FSM technologies with expected removal rates from desk review.
  4. Review wastewater treatment technologies currently being used in the refugee camps including best practice for operation and management and expected efficiency in terms of quality parameters.
  5. Compare management of FSM sites in camps with ideal management practices from desk review.
  6. Comparison of various technologies and ranking of efficiency it terms of BoD removal, capacity, space requirements, operation & management complexity and costs, environmental impact, national regulations & guidelines and safety of populations
  7. Recommendations on optimum FSM technology for use in the Rohingya refugee camps including best practice for operation and management.
  8. Provide recommendations for development of WASH Sector FSM database to monitor quality of sewage treatment in the refugee camps.
