Photographer and videographer
The MENA Communications Section produces a high volume of multimedia products (photos, videos and stories) every quarter, in addition to infographs, photo essays and general social media posts especially around L3 emergencies. To support this work, the MENA Regional communications office is requesting the provision of high quality photographer and/or videographer for multimedia content gathering to help cover the many competing deadlines in the region and increase visibility.
BACKGROUND
There is an ongoing requirement for production of evidence-based visibility material that documents key children’s issues and ongoing responses in the field, to support UNICEF’s advocacy efforts with legislatures, policy makers, media, donors and the public at large. Therefore, the Communication Section is requesting to have several high quality photographers and/or videographers on contract who can quickly fill urgent assignments in the region.
To meet this requirement, it is necessary to have powerful photos and at times b-roll video that can be used for social media, print reports, media pitches and other communications use. Video content will be edited by MENA communications team. Content will be used for documenting UNICEF’s work in the region and will be disseminated through different channels including website, social media platforms and donor reports. Materials will be shared with media.
UNICEF MENA Communication and Advocacy section would like to engage, through an LTA, the services of a few high level photographers and/or videographers who also has experience in developing video content and who will be available at short notice to undertake field visits for documenting UNICEF activities and programmes.Experience covering emergencies counties and working with children is required.
OBJECTIVE
To produce high quality photos and/or b-roll video content as required for multimedia productions to document UNICEF’s activities in the field, to share with stakeholders at national and global level and to use as an advocacy and visibility tool.
ACTIVITIES, TASKS, DELIVERABLES AND TIMELINES
Photographers/ videographer:
To produce sets of high quality photographs from field visits as required based on need and to address rapidly changing situations on the ground where content can be used to tap into news hooks and report on conditions for children on the ground. In some cases it would also require capturing video content that will be edited by the Regional office.
The photo journalist / videographer will be briefed on specific projects and issues to be covered based on UNICEF priorities and requirements.
The consultant may be required to travel to remote, insecure and hard-to-reach areas to get relevant photos and video content. That includes travel to Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen and other countries as needed. The photographer will secure their own visa when possible, but UNICEF might provide support in getting the visa on a case-by-case basis. The photographer has to arrange own travel and will get reimbursed once travel is completed. If UNICEF cancels or postpones the trip after the ticket has been purchased, UNICEF will reimburse the cost of the ticket or cover the cost of changing the ticket. UNICEF will NOT pay DSA, so the photographer will have to submit a daily rate, which will include their fees and their accommodation and food. Travel days will be paid at half of the daily rate.
Primary Photography tasks:
- Photograph relevant activities, keeping in mind culture, gender and other diverse sensitivities as per UNICEF guidelines.
- The photos should be usable for diverse audiences and have universal appeal.
- Provide captions to accompany the photos.
- Ensure that consent forms are signed by all children and / or guardians as per UNICEF guidelines.
- The consultant will be required to work in close coordination with the communication specialist/s in the MENA region with overall supervision by the Regional Chief of communications.
- Final submission of photos should be in RAW and high res JPEGS format.
Video content
- The requirements of each individual assignment will be discussed with the Communication focal point prior to commencement but the photographer should also be able to collect raw video footage
- Film B-roll material.
- The consultant will be briefed by the concerned Communication Officer and support team on the ground for each field assignment;
- The consultant will be required to work in close coordination with the communication specialist/s during the filming.
- Shooting at various locations with possible inclusion of interviews/sound bites of children, parents, community members, teachers, volunteers as required.
Consultants may be required to work on Fridays and Saturdays based on the requirements of the assignment.
Tools and equipment
The photographer and/or videographer will bring and use own equipment and might be required to provide a list of equipment depending on the specific locations.

A selection of powerful photos in large JPEG + RAW format with complete captions entered in IPTC code format unless otherwise specified and in some cases b-roll content.

Fees (which includes travel costs) will be paid on completion of travel. Fees will be paid as per the number of days actually worked and on successful completion of the assignment. On travels days, half of the day rate payment will be provided. Total number of days of assignment will be decided and fixed by the Regional Chief of Communication or MENA Communication focal point/s and the same communicated to the contractor in writing before the start of the assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS, SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND ADDITIONAL COMPETENCIES
This LTA requires professionals in their respective fields whose experience and quality of work demonstrably meet the highest international standards. They must have an excellent track record along with experience of working in the social development sector, and preferably in emergency settings. The specialists should use latest technology in the fields of photography and/or filming as well as the following:
- Proven expertise in development photography
- Extensive experience with high resolution digital photography
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- Previous experience with UNICEF would be an asset.
- Previous experience working in the MENA region is an asset.
- Proven expertise in development videography and story telling
- Past experience in working with children and families in often difficult settings is a must.
CONDITIONS OF WORK
Meetings with UNICEF communication team will be arranged as and when needed. UNICEF will provide in country transportation for assignments and focal points.
