Description
The United Nations Global Service Centre (GSC) solicits the services of a consultancy company to carry out Biodiversity Assessment of its two (2) sites identified as follows: 1) United Nations Logistics Base (UNLB), Brindisi, Italy. 2) United Nations Support Base (UNSB-V), Valencia, Spain. The biodiversity assessment and the subsequent action plan will support GSC Environmental Policy and its ISO14001 requirements, with the aim to leave the lightest possible footprint on the environment and to increase awareness for some of the important flora and fauna legislation applicable to the GSC sites. The key objectives of implementing this project will, among other benefits, achieve the following outcomes: • Commitment to the conservation of protected species present on GSC operational areas. • Identification of plant species which are of interest, also due to their rarity, and a series of tree planting schemes of native species. • Development and implementation of a landscape and wildlife management strategy throughout the life cycle of GSC operations. • Management of ponds for certain animal species. • Continued support for the protection of Adriatic Sea that bound the GSC Brindisi site at the southern and western ends. • Protection of nesting bird species which are of particular interest ecologically and also due to their scarcity. • Provision of environmentally focused opportunities for staff members to provide support for gardening in common GSC locations which make office surrounding more environmentally sustainable. • Facilitate communication and sharing of best-practice and skills for biodiversity in order to provide advice and data for decision making on projects within the global UN Field Missions. Subsequently, the results of the assessment will also enable GSC to: • Implement actions in order to complete all recommendations that will be outlined in the Biodiversity Assessment report. • Monitor biodiversity and progress against recommendations that will be set out in the Biodiversity Assessment report and the accompanying Biodiversity Action Plan. • Ensure the long term future of GSC sites that will complement, but not duplicate, other environmental activities.
