Goal and Objectives

 

Overall Goal of the Program

To improve the nutritional status of children under five years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers and adolescent girls 11-19 years of age using a system-strengthening approach. This program will be aligned with the principles and implementation framework of the SUN-NECS II strategy and the National Nutrition Strategic Plan (NNSP) 2017-2021. This will also complement UNICEF Malawi’s country programme in sectors such as health, WASH, HIV/AIDS, Early Childhood Development (ECD) to achieve its intended outcomes related to child survival, child development, participation and protection. 

 

Specific Objectives:

  • To improve early initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour after birth for at least 80% of 31,836 new born children (LiveBirths);
  • To improve exclusive breastfeeding for at least 70% of 14149 children 0-5 months;
  • To improve breastfeeding up to 2 years for at least 50% of 42,448 children aged 6-23 months;
  • To improve the minimum acceptable diet of 15% of 42,448 children aged 6-23 months (food diversity and frequency of feeding);
  • Distribute MNP to at least 80% of the 42,448 children aged 6-23 months;
  • To improve home-based WASH in at least 60% of 150,967 households in both districts;
  • To improve Nutrition status of at least 75% of 91,971 adolescent girls’ (11-19 years)
  • To improve the nutritional status of at least 60% of 35,373 pregnant and lactating women (15-49 years);
  • To reach at least 60% of estimated 100,000 households of children 0 to 36 months with integrated early child development (ECD) in nutrition interventions (active and interactive nutrition and recommended care practices for child development);
  • To build the capacity of 480 frontline workers, program managers and community networks in improving the nutrition and care practices at home;
  • To create community accountability and monitoring mechanism to protect and improve nutrition and care behaviour at family and community level;
  • To screen at least 95% of 116,732 children 6 to 59 months for acute malnutrition
