Description

It is widely recognised that the education of girls and boys is an important factor in improving human development and reducing poverty, and that their inclusion in the educational mainstream leads to an all-round increase in social and economic welfare. In the Iraqi context some areas see girls performing poorly, while in others girls outperform boys on a number of indicators.  More boys than girls are repeating and dropping out of primary schools while fewer girls continue into and complete secondary education.

In some geographical areas in Iraq,  girls are prevented from enrolling, attending or completing basic education due to cultural barriers or a general lack of understanding of the importance of education, while from the supply side, gender insensitive policies, curriculum, textbooks as well as gender discriminatory classroom processes impede or deprive girls of equal opportunities to education.  It is difficult to determine how these factors, especially from the supply side, affect the education of girls without having an objectively verifiable basis.  UN Women is therefore seeking an international consultant supported by a local team to carry out a gender analysis to ascertain the extent to which supply side inputs and processes are gender sensitive.
