Description
The United Nations has a requirement for a prefabricated, hard wall, modular accommodation system which would allow horizontal and/or vertical compounding to quickly and easily erect buildings of one, two, or maximum three floors of different sizes. The system is to be used as either living or office accommodation, and will be deployed in peacekeeping operations around the world. The key requirements therefore should include, but are not limited to, the following :
1. FUNCTIONALITY AND FLEXIBILITY OF DESIGN
a. Agile and effective for rapid deployment and re-deployment.
b. Design should be simple, easy to assemble and to disassemble, and sturdy enough to withstand multiple erections and disassemblies.
c. Modularity of design may include other components such as staircases, corridor elements, overhead roof like structures, cooking/pantry and bathroom/toilet regular or capsule-like installations, and other technical support elements.
d. Adaptability/Flexibility to combine components in different configurations.
e. Capacity to endure rugged usage under the extreme weather and environmental conditions typical of desertic, tropical, and cold climates.
f. Structural stability and overall design to reasonably withstand:
• Extraordinary wind conditions (mixed with rain, sand, dust, or snow) as found in desertic, tropical, and cold climates.
• Seismic loads.
• Additional overhead loads such as photovoltaic elements, solar water heaters/boilers, and protection against potential attacks (i.e. sandbags).
g. Expected life span: 10 years of continuous and heavy use.
2. ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT DESIGN
a. Minimal environmental footprint.
b. The system will contain no-hazardous or non-degradable materials.
c. Energy-efficient electrical design and installation.
d. Energy-efficient heating/cooling system, CFC free.
e. Insulated and designed to reduce energy consumption in any climate.
f. Energy self-sustaining design such as photovoltaic and solar water heating system.
g. Provide a healthy and safe working or living environment.
3. TRANSPORTATION
a. All system components will be supplied either fully assembled, disassembled, semi-assembled, or flatpacked (without shipping container), or in any combination of these modalities. All disassembled or semi-assembled components must be efficiently packagable and ready to be shipped in 20’ ISO shipping containers by sea, and/or ground transportation.
