Description

INTRODUCTION ON BULK FOOD ATM (Automated Teller Machine) DISPENSER (One Unit)
The United Nations World Food Programme hereinafter referred to as the “WFP”, with its Headquarters located in Via C.G.
Viola, 68/70, 00148 Rome, Italy is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food
assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience by assisting almost 100
million people in around 83 countries each year. About 17,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas,
directly serving the hungry poor.
WFP East & Central Africa Regional Bureau (RBN) seeks to purchase A Bulk food ATM (Automated Teller Machine)
dispenser.
At food distribution points in refugee camps, food is often lost, mishandled or wasted by the time refugees receive it. Refuges
usually lack proper storage systems for the food they receive which exposes them to disease and sickness as food is not kept
properly. Refuges are also vulnerable to theft as food distributions take place at a regular time and at the same place. Food is
mainly procured internationally which results in high costs for the assisting organizations & Donors.
WFP has come up with an innovative cost-effective and localised approach to solving these challenges and in turn boosting local
economies, local supply chain and local capacities, while reducing the carbon food print assistance by launching the Bulk Food
ATM Dispenser.
The Bulk Food ATM Dispensers is an automated food dispensary at refugee camp distribution points. Food will no longer need
to be transported in bulk form another country or continent, nor will it need to be repackaged on-site or distributed by scooping
or similar method. Essentially Bulk food ATM Dispensers provides continuous monitored commodities is in an on-demand
solution. With Bulk food ATM dispensers, refugees take a shopping cart into a clean, cool warehouse where each machine
contains a specific food item. They swipe their E-Card (Scope) and select the amount of food they want and are able to carry for
home storage.
In addition to the challenges this traditional distribution model presents around empowerment, protection, food safety and
quality, and environmental impact, the global COVID-19 pandemic presents several critical new ones. Much of the distribution
process is manual and involves physical contact between people, equipment, and paper documents. The current model does not
allow for the social distancing - now required to limit the spread of COVID-19 - and presents a significant health risk that needs
to be minimized if not eliminated.
